Why the Home Internationals should be welcomed back

In 1984, Northern Ireland were crowned champions of the Home Nations. That tournament turned out to be the final football competition between the four home nations, with England and Scotland both declaring that they would not take part in future contests. The league-based tournament was discontinued for a variety of reasons, with the main one’s being a congested fixture list, severe showings of hooliganism and a general lack of interest in the games. Now, though, it looks as though the historic Championship could be about to make a return.

England would prefer to win the World Cup rather than host it

England’s hopes to host the 2018 World Cup took a turn for the worse recently as it was revealed that the media have “significantly damaged” their bid to host the coveted tournament. But do England really want to stage the World Cup in eight years time?

The X Factor: What’s the point?

Saturday night: when millions of people neglect their social lives to sit in front of the TV to watch manufactured pop artists sing in front of an audience, and I use the word sing in the loosest sense of the word. After years of seeing acts “sing their hearts out” on their way to the million-pound recording contract and then disappear into the darkness of celebrity cast-offs, is there really a point to the X Factor?

Video Technology simply isn’t feasible

Association football has been a way of life since it took a formal bow in a London tavern in 1863. The debates, discussions and arguments still rumble on to this day and, as part of the modern game, the topic that gets all football fans talking is video technology.

Rooney should leave and go abroad

There always seems to be an over-hyped topic in football. Whether it’s the physicality of the modern game or ridiculously defensive tactics, football fans and media outlets alike always have big news to discuss again and again, until it isn’t even a news story anymore. Wayne Rooney’s future as a Manchester United player seems to be the latest example of this, with stories, true or otherwise, coming out of the club every other minute.

Capello departure will leave door open for fresh English manager

Fabio Capello announced a few weeks ago that, unsurprisingly, he would leave his post as England manager when his current contract runs out, after Euro 2012. The FA, amid media criticism and pressure from somewhat-erratic fans, stated shortly before Capello’s announcement that the next man to lead the Three Lions would be English. Although it was expected that Capello would only guide England for one more tournament, the question of who will be the next England manager has become something of a hot debate, two years before any decision should be made.

England need balance, width and new centre-back pairing

England start their qualifying campaign for EURO 2012 on Friday, just under four months since their 2010 World Cup campaign got underway with a draw against USA. After a World Cup of heartbreak and woe many England fans are still suffering from an almost-clichéd World Cup hangover.

TV Rights Are Wrong For Football

This is an article that I produced for my AS-Level English Language coursework. It’s as relevant now as it was then.

So the Premier League season is nearly upon us, with Chelsea currently holding the trophy. The thing is, most British people cannot watch the action as it happens, seeing as though big television companies, like Sky and ESPN, get to show the most games simply because they have more money than terrestrial channels; BBC and ITV for example.
