Sian
Massey will not referee Corby Town vs. Eastwood Town at the weekend as the
furore over sexist remarks made by Andy Gray and Richard Keys continues.
Massey
was due to referee the Blue Square Bet North match but has been withdrawn from
the match by the Professional Game Match Officials, who issued a statement to
explain their decision:
“The
focus needs to be on the football match not the officials. It would be unfair
on the clubs involved.”
The
assistant referee was subject to offensive remarks regarding her gender and the
ability to officiate a football match from Sky Sports presenters Keys and Gray,
who have now left the television company and will no longer appear on Sky TV.
The
move from the PGMO, though, is an odd one, as Massey seemed to have the backing
of all football fans as the fight against discrimination continues. While there
are some fans who don’t agree that the Sky pair should have been sacked for
their “banter”, most would be happy to see Massey back in football as soon as
possible.
