Yes, you read that correctly. The summer transfer window is nearing an end and teams are expected to make impulse buys in the coming weeks. Manchester City have been the busiest side in the transfer market, spending over £100 million on new players for the new term. Rivals United have spent quite a lot on relatively conservative players (Bebe, Hernandez and Smalling are certainly ones for the future) while Liverpool are simply looking to re-build after the Rafa Benitez debacle. It is none of these teams who have been making the headlines today, however.

The former Ajax, Juventus and Barcelona midfielder has joined Championship outfit Crystal Palace, two years after he last played professional football. The maestro was part of ITV’s punditry team that was sent to South Africa for the recent World Cup. It is reported that Leicester City were also in talks with the Dutch player although he failed to agree terms. Davids has joined Palace on a pay-as-you-play deal, saying that he just wants to “enjoy football and show the best I can do.”Davids broke his leg in a pre-season friendly for Ajax in 2007 and declared that he would leave the club once his contract expired. Davids did leave and it looked as though the player, who also had a spell at Premier League Tottenham Hotspur, had ended his career. The thirty-seven-year-old, however, has now made a return to football, with the Dutch legend looking to attend Saturday’s match against Ipswich Town.
Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas is rumoured to be close to signing for Tottenham. Harry Redknapp is said to be a big fan of the French centre-back who was hugely disappointing last season for the Gunners. Gallas, who is thirty-three, will add some much-needed experience to a back-line that consists of Ledley King and Michael Dawson, with Younes Kaboul and Sebastien Bassong also in contention.
