Rafael Nadal stormed past Tomas Berdych to claim his second Wimbledon title. Nadal dominated to a 6-3 7-5 6-4 victory over Berdych, who was outplayed completely by the masterful Nadal. The victory means that the Spaniard has now claimed eight Grand Slam titles.
Nadal dazzled the world in the semi-final against Andy Murray, showing real power throughout. The 24 year old was too good for the Scot, beating him 6-4 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 to book his place in the final. In-form Berdych had to overcome six-time champion Roger Federer and third seed Novak Djokovic to reach the Wimbledon final, a first for the Czech player. While Nadal is considered as the number one in the world rankings, Berdych is 13th. He was though, up for the challenge: "I'm still not done yet here. One more to go”.
The second set also went Nadal’s away as Berdych lost concentration towards the end, giving away three unforced errors on the way to a 7-5 loss. By now Nadal was in full swing and he powered to victory in the final set to claim the Championship.
Berdych did extremely well to get to the final and could not have faced a more difficult opponent; an in-form Nadal. The testing conditions did not help Berdych, who had to put up with blustering winds forcing both players to make frequent unforced errors throughout the match.
Nadal has always been a favourite at Wimbledon; even when he beat Murray in the semi’s, the crowd responded with respect and admiration. Berdych, though, gained his fair share of support, with many fans backing the underdog.
Berdych was simply outplayed by Nadal, who was overjoyed with his victory, performing a gracious forward roll and fist-pump to the crowd to celebrate.
